Call out for artists - Museum of the Moon creative commission

Published: Friday 27 August 2021

From 13 September – 11 November, Luke Jerram’s touring artwork, Museum of the Moon, touches down at Durham Cathedral.

The installation marks the second phase of Durham Cathedral’s new visual arts programme and to celebrate we’re offering local artists, makers, and creatives the opportunity to create a new piece of work to be exhibited during the Moon’s time at the cathedral.

The work should be inspired by the Museum of the Moon, and one or more of the following themes:

  • Durham Cathedral
  • Pilgrimage / Northern Saints Trails
  • County Durham - its people and places
  • Astronomy

FAQs

Can the artwork be showcased any time before the closing date?

Yes, absolutely, work can be showcased as soon as it's ready after commission as long as it’s ready for exhibition prior to it closing on Thursday 11 November 2021.

Why does Durham Cathedral prefer the copyright of the work to be transferred?

Depending on the work created, we may want to permanently or regularly display it at the cathedral, online, or incorporate it into our retail offer. The creator will retain moral rights in the case of any transfer, and always be credited when the work is displayed. If the artist wishes to retain copyright they will still be eligible for the commission, and details will be finalised prior to the commission starting, so there is clarity on all sides about process.
