A warm space for all this Winter

Published: Tuesday 24 January 2023

This winter we’re opening our Chapter House providing warmth to those who may need it.

Providing a place of warmth

With the ongoing cost of living crisis and the rapid increase of gas and electric prices, we’re opening the Chapter House as part of the national Warm Spaces Initiative.

The Chapter House, located just off the cathedral Cloisters, will be open to all, providing a warm space to sit and relax.

The Reverend Canon Charlie Allen says,

"In 2022, we saw gas prices in the UK rise more than 120% while electric costs rose more than 50%, leaving some people the hard decision of whether to buy food for the table or heat their homes. This national initiative supports people to keep warm during the day and by opening the Chapter House we hope to be able to offer those within our local community, who may find themselves struggling, a guaranteed place of warmth, fellowship and refreshment. "

Further support

Chaplains are available in the cathedral from 10am daily and can provide support or a listening ear for those who want to express their worries and dilemmas .

Other spaces in the local area are opening their doors to keep warm this winter. Find out more on Warm Welcome, Warm Spaces and Durham County Council website.
