Imaging Services

Request images from our collections, licence an image for use, or find out about taking your own images.

2023 NOTICE: We are sorry, but we are unable to offer new digitisation at present. There are also significant delays in responding to enquiries already received. This is due to a vacant post in Imaging Services, and a significant backlog of requests.

Ordering images

If you would like an image from our collections, complete an Image Request Form.

Make sure to fill out every section of the form. Give as much detail as possible about the item you would like a copy of.

Download an image request form (Word format)

Send your completed Image Request Form to imaging@durhamcathedral.co.uk or through the Imaging Enquiry contact page.

Make sure to sign the declaration at the end of the form.

If you need images for publication, you will also need to complete a Permission to Reproduce form - see below.

After receiving your completed form, we will check if the image requested is already on file.

Only a portion of our collections has been digitised. New photography may be required at additional cost. It may not always be possible to digitise an item in our collection.

At present, we are only able to supply images from those on file. New photography is not possible until further notice. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

We supply images in a range of digital formats only.

We are not able to supply photocopies or other physical copies of images.

Apply for permission to use images

If you would like to reproduce an image supplied by us, or an image you have taken yourself from an item in our collections in a book, journal article, or another form, please complete an Permission to Reproduce form.

Download a Permission to Reproduce Form (Word format)

Once complete, send it to imaging@durhamcathedral.co.uk or through the imaging enquiry contact page.

Once we have received your completed Permission to Reproduce form, we will work out any charges that may apply and get in touch with you to agree and arrange payment, where applicable.

Taking Your Own Images

You can also take images yourself of items in our collections when you book an appointment to view rare books and special collections.

Any copies of images you take are also subject to copyright law.
